When It All Falls Down by Chinedu Achebe - Book Review
This fast-paced novel starts off with the death of the enigmatic and just recently retired NBA basketball player, Kobe Bryant from a plane crash. Anyone not living under a rock, recalls that day -The grief, the dystopian atmosphere which the collective would carry into covid and eventual lockdowns. Through it all, we see Obi, his wife, family and friends tackle issues such as love, intimacy, separations and even death. By the way, it's also election season and Donald Trump and Joe Biden are duking it out for the White House.
And then there is the brutal death of George Floyd by Police and the subsequent protests that followed. The shock, rage and fear (especially with regard to their son, Ike-a black boy) would have a lasting effect on Obi and his family. To protest or not to protest? As a Nigerian American is it your duty to fight for justice alongside your fellow Black American brothers and sisters, or do you just sit it out and appreciate what the United States has to offer? According to Nkechi, it is one's duty to protest.
Overall, I highly recommend this novel! It is reminiscent of a time we wish to forget but cannot afford to. It is an excellent addition to covid literature that will be beneficial to historians for years to come.
