Sci-Fi Stories That Imagine A Future Africa
My first encounter with Nigerian American novelist, Nnedi Okoroafor was with the novel, Who Fears Death; a post-apocalyptic fantasy novel about Onyesonwu, a young woman who is a product of rape as well as of warring tribes whose objective is to destroy her malevolent father using her skills as a sorceress. I read this novel about seven years ago. Since then I've continued to be inspired by this literary force whose work has garnered critical acclaim for its magical realism centered around African characters. I love the fact that Nnedi often writes about Africa in the future and find it even more exciting that her bestseller, Who Fears Death, is currently in the works of being an HBO series. In light of the new Marvel movie, Black Panther which is based on a fictional African country Wakanda, and set in the future, I felt compelled to share this Ted talk by Nnedi on how some people view Africa in futuristic terms.
